What I Do

Engagement - design and facilitation for better decisions, collaborative action and more robust relationships

Consultation at the interface of government, community and industry. A hot spot for negotiating the fit between public and private good, but the rhetoric is usually ahead of the practice. Many problems need to handled by networks of government agencies and private interests. How do we make dialogue and shared decision making part of normal business? We need a new skill set to do this.

Knowledge - facilitation of action learning and communities of practice

Knowledge is what happens as people interact ? they agree or disagree on what?s going on in the world, what should happen and how to take effective action. Action learning , a stripped-down version of action research, is the best methodology for building new knowledge around specific problems and opportunities. It?s grass-roots up, challenges old assumptions and tests ideas in real-world action.

Communities of practice are the core element of a KM system - lowest cost, fastest transfer of information, with the credibility that means new knowledge is applied, and the supports that mean knowledge is applied flexibly.

Strategy - design and facilitation of strategic planning

Strategy is about anticipation - of uncertain futures. It's also about creating integrated response - getting the parts of your organisational response functioning autonomously but interdependently. Strategy is built on a deep conversation about the way things are and are becoming. It's a conversation of multiple perspectives to build a rich picture. It's a conversation among equals because in the end each of us is going to have to operate autonomously. What we need is shared and testable judgments about what?s happening and what needs to be done. That's what I facilitate.
